How Often Should Carpet be Replaced?

When Do I Need to Replace My Carpet?

Carpets don't last forever just like any other flooring material, and it has to be replaced after a certain period. It is sometimes hard to know when the time is right to replace your carpet. You can figure it out by checking a few things regarding your carpet, such as age, wear level, damages like stains, smells, or tears, and increased allergies level.

If you are still unable to know when you should replace your carpet, read about the following few indicators that will tell you that it is time to get a new carpet:

Carpet’s Age

The quality of carpets has been improving throughout the years. Today, the average lifespan of a carpet is from 5 to 15 years. Several other factors play a role in the carpet's durability, such as the type of carpet, carpet cushion, carpet fibres, and the exposure of carpet to wear and tear. For instance, a carpet in your bedroom which is usually less crowded, will last longer than the carpets in the hallway. Moreover, a carpet in a house with pets and children won't last longer than a carpet in a quieter environment.

There are also many other factors to consider. No specific period for any carpet will tell you that now it is time to replace it. However, some physical indicators will help you determine the need of replacing your carpet.

There are a few ways in which you can increase the lifespan of your carpet. It is recommended to get your carpet professionally cleaned every 18-24 months. Make sure you vacuum it regularly. Also, follow the maintenance and carpet care instructions provided by the manufacturer.

If you have had a carpet for more than 20 years, it is best to replace it to maintain a healthy environment in your house.

Carpet Wear, Damage, and Tear

There are several reasons that your carpet or carpet cushion can wear out. When this happens, the carpet starts to show wear and tear, damage, and wrinkles.  When the carpets have small tears, they can be repaired with certain techniques and tricks, but they can't be repaired if the tears are larger. In high-traffic areas, carpets start to show wear just by the way they look. For instance, you have bought a carpet with vibrant colours, but now it is starting to look dirty and faded even after you clean it. This is the indicator that it is time for carpet replacement. More often, the carpet starts to show the signs of wearing out in the areas right in front of the doorways. Even with time, once a carpet with a vibrant and bold look starts to look dull and faded, and when this happens, you should start to look for new carpets. However, just the fading of colour shouldn't be the only reason to replace your carpet. You should also look for other signs of wearing out of the carpet and then take the step forward to carpet replacement.

Carpets placed in high-traffic areas such as doorways, hallways, and playrooms are more likely to show wearing-out indicators. It will wear out because of the matting. The way you know that your carpet is matted is that it will look flatter than its original look. When a carpet is matted, it isn't easy to restore it to its original condition. That is why matted carpet is the best indicator that you should now get a new one.

The carpet cushion underneath the upper layer of the carpet can also be worn out. If your carpet has wrinkles on it or the surface of your carpet is uneven, it is an indicator that its cushion is worn out. If one area of the carpet is higher or lower than the other area, you need to replace the carpet cushion and the carpet itself.

Stains and Smells

Among many reasons, stains and smells are some of the most common reasons people replace their carpets with new ones. Stains and smells can cause irreparable damages to your carpet for certain reasons. It can happen because you have kids and pets in your house that mess on it, or they can happen just because you have an accident and spill something. Several techniques are useful for getting rid of carpet stains, but some stains are stubborn and almost impossible, like red wine stains and bathroom accidents.

You can't just hide all the stains on your carpet because some stains are very prominent. You can get professional help to get rid of some stains or to make them dull. But even professionals struggle to remove certain types of stains from your carpets, such as bleach stains and mustard stains.

With stains, there can also be a very unpleasant smell. These unpleasant smells are that the stains settle down in the carpet fibres or the carpet cushion. Stains can also cause mould and mildew, which are pretty good indicators that you should replace your carpet because such odours can't be removed, and the only option you are left with is to get a new carpet.

Allergies and Respiratory Issues

Mildew, mould, and dirt in your carpet can cause several allergies and respiratory issues. If you notice that you or any of your family members are showing symptoms of allergies such as coughing or sneezing, your old carpet has a lot of hidden dirt in it.

It can also cause several respiratory issues such as cold, running nose, and milds. This is because an old carpet has many bacterias, dirt particles, mould, residue, chunks of food, and stains in it. These things not only make your carpet dirty but also make the air in your house unhealthy. So, you are only left with the option of replacing the carpet.

Getting a new carpet will not only enhance the beauty of your house but will also keep you and your beloved family members safe and healthy.
