Vomit on the carpet is one of those messes nobody wants to deal with, but acting fast makes all the difference. Knowing how to clean vomit off carpet properly stops stains from setting and kills the smell before it takes hold. Whether it's a sick kid, a pet accident or a rough night, this guide walks you through every step using stuff you probably already own.
At Wizard Carpets, we've seen every type of carpet stain imaginable. We put this guide together so Gold Coast homeowners can tackle vomit cleanup with confidence and keep their carpets looking good for longer.
What You Need Before You Start
Grab these supplies before touching the mess. Having everything within reach means you won't waste time searching mid-cleanup.
Rubber gloves
Paper towels or old rags
A plastic scraper, spatula or old credit card
Baking soda
White vinegar
Dishwashing liquid
Warm water
Spray bottle
Clean cloths or towels
Step 1: Remove the Solids Straight Away
Speed matters here. The longer vomit sits on carpet fibres, the deeper it soaks in and the harder the stain becomes to shift.
Put on rubber gloves.
Use a plastic scraper or spatula to scoop up as much solid material as possible.
Work from the outside edges toward the centre to avoid spreading.
Dump the solids into a plastic bag and seal it.
Blot the area gently with paper towels. Don't rub or press hard.
Tip: If the vomit has dried, sprinkle warm water over it and let it sit for five minutes to soften before scraping.
Step 2: Apply Baking Soda to Absorb Moisture and Odour
Baking soda is your best mate for this job. It pulls moisture out of carpet fibres and neutralises the acid in vomit that causes that lingering stink.
Cover the entire affected area with a thick layer of baking soda.
Let it sit for 15 to 20 minutes.
Vacuum up the baking soda thoroughly.
Repeat if the area still feels damp or smells off.
Step 3: Clean the Stain With a Vinegar Solution
This is where the actual stain removal happens. The vinegar breaks down the proteins in vomit while the dish soap lifts the discolouration from carpet fibres.
Mix the following in a spray bottle:
Ingredient
Amount
Warm water
2 cups
White vinegar
1 cup
Dishwashing liquid
1 tablespoon
Spray the solution generously over the stained area.
Let it soak for 10 minutes.
Blot with a clean cloth, working from the outside in.
Rinse the cloth in clean water and blot again to remove soap residue.
Repeat until the stain fades.
How to Get Rid of Vomit Smell in Carpet
Sometimes the stain disappears but the smell sticks around. That sour odour comes from stomach acid soaking deep into the carpet pad. Here are a few ways to knock it out completely.
Baking soda overnight: Sprinkle a fresh layer over the area, leave it overnight and vacuum in the morning.
Enzyme cleaner: Pick up a pet enzyme cleaner from the supermarket. These break down organic matter and work brilliantly on vomit odour.
Hydrogen peroxide (3%): Test on a hidden spot first, then dab onto the area. Good for light-coloured carpets only.
Ventilation: Open windows and run a fan over the area to speed up drying. Damp carpet breeds bacteria and makes the smell worse.
Mistakes That Make Vomit Stains Worse
Plenty of people make these errors and end up with a bigger mess. Avoid the following and you'll save yourself a headache.
Rubbing the stain: This pushes vomit deeper into the fibres and spreads it sideways. Always blot.
Using hot water first: Heat can cook the proteins in vomit and set the stain permanently. Stick with warm or cool water.
Skipping the rinse: Leftover cleaning solution attracts dirt and leaves a sticky patch that stains faster than the rest of the carpet.
Ignoring the carpet pad: If vomit soaked through, the pad underneath holds the smell. You may need to pull the carpet back and treat the pad directly, or call in a professional carpet cleaner.
When to Consider Replacing Your Carpet
Most vomit stains come out with the steps above. But there are times when cleaning won't cut it and replacement is the smarter move.
The stain keeps coming back after multiple deep cleans.
The carpet pad is saturated and the smell won't go away.
Your carpet is already worn, matted or past its prime.
You're dealing with repeated stains in the same area from pets or kids.

Cleaning Vomit Off Different Carpet Types
Not all carpets respond the same way to cleaning. Knowing your carpet type helps you pick the right approach and avoid damage.
Synthetic (nylon, polyester): Handles most DIY cleaning solutions well. The vinegar method above works perfectly on these.
Wool: More sensitive to acidic cleaners. Use a milder solution with less vinegar and blot gently. Wool carpets benefit from professional cleaning advice for tough stains.
Berber (loop pile): The loops can trap debris. Take extra care when scraping solids and use a vacuum with good suction after baking soda treatment.
Frieze (twist pile): The twisted fibres hide stains well but also trap moisture. Make sure it dries fully to prevent mould.
Note: If you're not sure what carpet type you have, bring a sample into our Gold Coast showroom and we'll help you identify it.
