Knowing how to get blood out of carpet can save you a trip to the shops and a lot of stress. Blood stains look dramatic, but they respond well to the right treatment if you act quickly and avoid the one mistake most people make: using hot water.

This guide covers fresh stains, dried stains, and when it makes sense to call a professional. Whether it's a nosebleed, a cut finger, or a pet injury, the approach is the same.

Why Cold Water Matters for Blood Stains

Blood contains proteins that coagulate when exposed to heat. Hot water essentially cooks the blood into the carpet fibres, bonding it permanently. Cold water keeps the proteins loose so they lift out.

  • Always use cold or lukewarm water, never hot
  • Blot from the outside of the stain inward to avoid spreading
  • Never rub or scrub, as this pushes blood deeper into the pile
  • Work in stages rather than soaking the carpet all at once

This single rule makes more difference than any cleaning product you choose.

What You Need Before You Start

You probably have everything at home already. Grab these items before touching the stain so you can work without interruption.

  • Clean white cloths or paper towels (coloured cloths can transfer dye)
  • Cold water in a spray bottle or bowl
  • Dish soap (plain, no added moisturisers)
  • Hydrogen peroxide (3% solution from the chemist)
  • Salt or baking soda
  • A blunt knife or spoon for dried stains

Avoid reaching for bleach or ammonia-based cleaners. These can damage carpet fibres and void your warranty.

How to Remove Fresh Blood From Carpet

Fresh blood is far easier to remove than dried blood. The faster you act, the less product you'll need. Most fresh stains come out with cold water alone.

  1. Blot the stain gently with a dry white cloth to absorb as much blood as possible
  2. Spray cold water directly onto the stain, working from the edges inward
  3. Blot again with a fresh cloth until the cloth comes away mostly clean
  4. Mix one tablespoon of dish soap with two cups of cold water
  5. Apply the soapy solution with a clean cloth, dabbing gently
  6. Rinse by spraying cold water and blotting until all soap residue is gone
  7. Press a dry towel over the area and weigh it down for 30 minutes to absorb remaining moisture

For small stains, you may not even need the dish soap. Patience and cold water do the heavy lifting.

How to Remove Dried Blood From Carpet

Dried blood takes more effort, but it's still manageable at home. The key is loosening the dried residue before applying any liquid.

  1. Scrape away as much dried blood as you can using a blunt knife or the edge of a spoon
  2. Vacuum up the loosened flakes
  3. Dampen the stain with cold water and let it sit for five minutes
  4. Apply a paste of salt and cold water, or sprinkle baking soda over the dampened area
  5. Leave the paste for 15 to 20 minutes to draw the blood out of the fibres
  6. Blot with a clean damp cloth, rinsing and repeating until the stain fades
  7. For stubborn remnants, apply a small amount of 3% hydrogen peroxide directly to the stain
  8. Blot immediately after the peroxide fizzes, then rinse with cold water
Method Best For How Long It Takes
Cold water only Fresh stains caught within minutes 5 to 10 minutes
Dish soap + cold water Fresh stains that have started to set 15 to 20 minutes
Salt or baking soda paste Partially dried or older stains 30 to 45 minutes
Hydrogen peroxide (3%) Stubborn dried stains on light carpet 10 to 15 minutes
Professional cleaning Large, old, or set-in stains Same-day service usually

Notice: Test hydrogen peroxide on a hidden area of carpet first. It can lighten some carpet colours, especially darker shades. If you see any colour change, stop and call a professional.

Household Products That Work on Blood Stains

You don't need expensive specialist cleaners. These common household items break down blood proteins effectively.

  • Dish soap — mild surfactant that lifts blood without damaging fibres
  • Hydrogen peroxide — oxidises blood on contact (light carpets only)
  • Salt — draws moisture and blood out of carpet pile through absorption
  • Baking soda — neutralises odour and helps lift dried residue
  • White vinegar — dissolves blood proteins when mixed with cold water
  • Meat tenderiser — contains enzymes that break down blood proteins (unseasoned only)

According to the Carpet Institute of Australia, enzyme-based cleaners are among the most effective options for protein-based stains like blood.

Mistakes That Make Blood Stains Permanent

A few common errors turn a removable stain into a permanent mark. Avoid these and you'll have a much better chance of full removal.

  • Using hot water at any stage of the cleaning process
  • Scrubbing aggressively, which pushes blood deeper and damages fibres
  • Applying too much liquid, which can soak the underlay and cause mould
  • Using bleach or harsh chemicals that strip carpet colour
  • Waiting days before treating the stain

Notice: If blood has soaked through to the carpet underlay, surface cleaning alone won't fix it. The underlay traps blood and can develop odour over time. A professional carpet cleaner can treat both layers properly.

When to Call a Professional Carpet Cleaner

DIY methods work well for most blood stains, but some situations call for professional help. There's no shame in it, and it's cheaper than replacing carpet prematurely.

  • The stain covers a large area or has been there for weeks
  • Blood has soaked through to the underlay beneath the carpet
  • Home methods have lightened but not fully removed the stain
  • You have expensive or delicate carpet (wool, silk, or patterned)

The American Cleaning Institute recommends professional treatment for any stain that doesn't respond to two rounds of home treatment.
